안중근함은 1번 손원일함, 2번 정지함에 이은 대한민국 해군의 3번째 214급 잠수함으로서 대함전, 대공전, 대잠전, 적 기지봉쇄 및 공격기뢰부설 임무 등을 수행 할 수 있고 수중에서 300개의 표적을 동시에 처리할 수 있는 능력을 보유하고 있습니다. 또한 최고 속력 20노트 (37km) 로 승조원 40여명을 태우고 美하와이까지 연료 재충전 없이 왕복 항해 할 수 있으며, 특히, 209급 잠수함과는 달리 공기불요장치 (API, Air Independent Propulsion) 를 탑재하고 있어 수면에 올라오지 않고 2주간 수중에서 작전수행이 가능해 디젤 잠수함으로는 세계 최고수준으로 평가 받고 있습니다.

AN JUNG GEUN is the third submarine of 214 level, The first Son Won Il, The second Jung Ji, in R.O.K Navy. It can carry out not only the antiship operations, the antiaircraft operation but also blocking the enemy base and placing an offensive submarine main and have the capability to deal with 300 targets in the water. additionally, it can voyage back and forth from ROK to Hawaii, U.S.A. without refueling in condition of picking 40 crews up and max speed 20knot/h(37km/h). Especially, it can carry  out an operation for tow weeks in the water because of loading a AIP(Air Independent Propulsion), being defferent from 209 level submarine. It is evaluated a world-class as a diesel submarine
