Tesla has helped transform the way electric cars are viewed around the world thanks to its range of fast, sexy electric cars.

Now a handful of companies are trying to change the way people view solar cars too -- working hard to produce cars that don't even need to plug in in order to be driven. A truly self-charging electric car, if you will.

Earlier this week, Dutch company Lightyear unveiled its LightYear One plug-in solar hybrid car. It can charge from a regular electric car charging station or CCS quick charge station -- but thanks to 1.25 kilowatts peak of solar panels on its body, it can also add an impressive 50-70 km of range per day simply by being parked outside.
