It's a belt that slides up and down on a cone. What it means in real life is that when you step on the pedal the engine winds up but the there are no gears for the Rogue to shift. Instead the belt slides up the cone into the Rogue engine's most efficient rev range so you get better fuel economy but some of engine drone.
